RWE makes Claus C Power Station available to Belgian market

Contribution to additional Belgian generation capacity

Den Bosch - RWE participates in the tender issued by the Belgian government for additional generation capacity. The energy company wants to make its gas-fired Claus C power plant in Maasbracht available to the Belgian grid for six years. RWE has submitted a tender book today.

The tender was issued by the Belgian government on 22 January 2014 because they would like to have additional 700 to 900 MW of generation capacity available. This is necessary to offset the capacity shortage which threatens due to the closing of nuclear power plants in the future.

“We want to contribute to Belgium’s security of supply and keep our plant generating electricity’, says Erwin van Laethem, CEO Essent. ‘It is a crossborder initiative which can be seen as a role model for the European electricity market.

“For a longer time, we have been in favour to find a joint and crossborder solution for the situation on the Belgian electricity market. We think Claus Power Station in the Netherlands can play an important role”, explains Frank Brichau, CEO Essent.be. ”We both have advantages. We keep our power plant generating electricity and help the Belgian Government – in favour of Belgian electricity consumers – with additional capacity.

Due to the current conditions in the Dutch market, earlier this year, RWE decided to take Claus C Power Station (installed capacity: 1.305 MW) on 1 July provisionally out of service. Should RWE win the tender, the plant can deliver the first power supply to Belgium in 2019. It will be completely under the supervision of the Belgian network manager Elia.

Claus C

The new, modern C unit was completed in 2012 as part of Claus Power Station in Maasbracht. It has a capacity of 1.305 MW and a very high efficiency of 58%.Geographically, the CCGT plant is well located: It is only three kilometres from the Belgian border and can be connected to the Belgian grid using a 13-kilometre high-voltage power line from the substation in Kinrooi.

RWE Generation SE

Since 1 January 2013, all generation in the RWE Group has been steered by RWE Generation SE, enabling the pooling of the generation and engineering expertise of RWE Power in Germany, RWE Essent in the Netherlands, and RWE npower in the UK. RWE has around 16,500 employees in its generation business and more than 40 GW of power generation capacity.
